NEWS RELEASE Ripple Effects launches free web site to help teens respond constructively to the attack San Francisco, CA - September 27, 2001 - Ripple Effects, the nation's leader in social learning software, announces the launch of a free web resource, Resist, to help teens respond constructively to the attack and its aftermath. Resist develops skills for managing feelings, promoting tolerance, and understanding patriotism. It offers methods for handling emotions like anger, grief, and fear, in a multimedia format teens like and can identify with. Loaded with rich imagery, interactive games, practice opportunities, and true stories, it is based on Ripple Effects multi-award winning whole spectrum learning system, shown to be effective in reducing aggression and increasing pro-social behavior. "Young people will really benefit from the opportunity this site offers to explore the issues brought up by the terrorist attacks. It lets them get the skills they need, working at their level, at their pace, and on their own time," says Adam Tenner, who works with youth as Executive Director of Metro TeenAIDS in Washington DC. "There are a wealth of resources right now telling kids - and their parents - what to do." says Ripple Effects COO, Sarah Berg. "Our piece of the mix is sharing how to do it - from managing feelings to promoting tolerance." "It's our way to help in the relief effort," says Ripple Effects CEO, Alice Ray, who adds "The name was chosen to recognize that the terrorist attack didn't end when the planes went down, it continues to damage us as long as our collective emotional distress is left unhealed. It begins anew every time someone tries to scapegoat an ethnic or religious group, or stifle dissent, and when our youth turn to alcohol or drugs to anesthetize what they are feeling." Ripple Effects was able to respond quickly by adapting content from its acclaimed CD-ROM-based software, currently used in schools and after-school programs nationally. Four topics are available at www.rippleeffects.com/resist/teens. Fourteen more will follow in the coming weeks.
