Social-emotional readiness to learn is an equity issue that must be addressed concurrent with addressing academic standards. Thus Ripple Effects is also aligned with common standards for SEL developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social Emotional Learning (CASEL), which have been adopted by some states. These fall into the general categories of awareness and regulation of self, awareness and constructive relations with others, and decision making skills to resolve conflict when interests of self and others inevitably conflict. (Elias et al, 1997, Payton, Graczyk, Wardlaw, Bloodworth, Tompsett & Weissberg, 2000; Zins, Elias, Greenberg, & Weissberg, 2000).
