No
other subject has as wide a divergence of views about what is appropriate
to be handled in the schools as the subject of sexuality. In some districts
or programs, sex education is required. In some, it is forbidden. Some
require teaching only about safety issues related to sex, especially
AIDS and STDs. Others require teaching only about abstinence, and/or
value based decision-making. Some require AIDS educators to include
information about condoms. Others forbid it. A few districts require
inclusion of sexual orientation, Many forbid it. Some require abuse
prevention training. Others do not.
In
view of this wide spectrum of needs, mandates, local values and politics,
the
only good sex education curriculum is the one that can be custom designed
to meet local needs.
Ripple
Effects software offers exactly that. Teachers or administrators can
start with all sexuality related subjects included (see
list below), and eliminate any they consider inappropriate for
their situation. They can be assured that whatever topics are remaining
will lead to targeted skill training in four areas: Decision Making,
Assertiveness, Impulse Control, and Personal Values.
