School Nurse News - September 1999 Research indicates that many teens trust their computers more than they do their parents. Too often, computers are teaching teens to hate, destroy, play at killing and distrust their parents even more. Now, the same computer technology that glorifies violence and reinforces teenagers' alienation can be used develop good character and connect teens more closely to their parents and community. Counselors, school nurses, teachers, youth program facilitators, and policemen are turning to Ripple Effects for Teens, a ground breaking new software program that offers teens help with the life challenges they face every day-from teasing, bullying, and being a loner, to family-related issues, and skills like managing feelings and resolving conflict. Ripple Effects for Teens has a family-related exercise for each of its more than 600 social topics- from sex, drugs, and religion to discipline issues. It also addresses many topics related to family relationships-family history, divorce, fighting with parents, alcoholic family members, and family violence. Teens can explore Relate confidentially, approaching it in whatever way they wish. Ripple Effects for Teens is the first in a series of social learning programs from Ripple Effects. In response to the Columbine tragedy, Ripple Effects is making its School Safety Needs Assessment Tool available free on the web.
