School Health Program News - September 1999

A Web-based school safety profiler is available to help schools identify potential problems. The profiler covers four areas that the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice have identified as connected with early warning signs of potential school violence:

1) discipline/school climate,

2) respect for persons (including people with perceived differences),

3) Presence of drugs, or alcohol, and

4) Presence of weapons.

The School Safety Profiler also asks about student's social skills in handling challenging situations, and student access to and confidence in community resources. Students and adults can fill out an anonymous survey on the web, see the results for their school, and compare educator and student perceptions.
