Teaching K-8 - October 1999 www.teachingk-8.com

Here's a software program that truly makes "a smaller world." From support for teaching conflict resolution to multicultural awareness, these programs will liven up your social studies curriculum!

Ripple Effects for Teens

Here's a multimedia database of more than 500 social topics for the needs of today's teens. Ripple Effects' new Ripple Effects for Teens is an effective research-based tool for teachers that addresses the social-emotional problems teens must address to increase life success.

Key Skills. Using 35 "True Stories" videos, the program helps build seven key skills: know yourself, make decisions, manage feelings, control impulses, stand up for yourself, belong and identify with others. Over 100 training modules help students develop these seven keys to being successful. All activities, including the journal, are password-protected so the teacher only has access to the points being earned as students work through the activities.

Comprehensive tools. Relate provides student tracking, 50 interactive assessment tools, and a management system that allows teachers to block any topic. For each topic, students can get facts, receive step-by-step training for solving a problem, see True Stories on how someone else deals with a problem, role-play a situation or apply the topic to more than 1,500 journal writing exercises. Built-in assessment tools provide a profile for learning style, temperament, creativity and sports. Students can also access the topics in a random order to get help with a challenge they may have or a topic of personal concern.

Teachers can access information and video training for handling the variety of student problems that might come up during a school year. A 200+ page guide provides guidance, lessons with discussion and supporting activity pages for using the program.
