Helping Teens Relate

THE F.I.S.H. NET - 1999

Ripple Effects for Teens is a multimedia tool designed to help teens solve some of life's toughest problems. This engaging and interactive database of social topics and skill training covers more than 600 problems that deal with, from self esteem and body image to race issues, peer pressure, and violence. Developed by a multicultural group of student advisors from San Francisco's urban core, Ripple Effects for Teens uses "hip" art, peer mentors, and engaging activities to teach what it calls "seven key abilities" including empathy, impulse control, decision making, and managing feelings. Schools can customize the software to include only topics they feel are appropriate, and a 200-page manual is included ideas for who could use Ripple Effects for Teens:

Classroom Teachers-During health or advisory periods, or with individual students as personal problems arise.

Vice Principals-dealing with behavior problems, for offenders and victims.

School Counselors- to facilitate communication, identify specific problems.

Detention, On-Site suspension, Saturday school program alternatives and Community, Based Programs-for violence, abuse, drug, and AIDS prevention; pregnant or parenting students; special needs students.
