Supreme court rules
Neither race quotas, nor segregation
- Schools may no longer use race as the defining factor in school assignment
- Previous rulings and consent decrees clearly require desegregation
Schools are forced to look at new options for achieving ethnic diversity in their student body. Even people who have bitterly opposed affirmative action mostly agree that greater diversity in schools is a good in itself and important to the functioning of a society that is both free and increasingly diverse. Various alternative methods have been examined to correct racial and ethnic imbalance. Economic metrics and parental education level are two of them. These tactics are more attractive to the academicians who view them in the abstract than to the children whom are almost certain to be stigmatized by them. Racial harassment is illegal and politically incorrect. Taunting of the poor and ignorant isn’t and never has been. More astute minds than mine will be looking for solutions to this for many years to come. Meanwhile, here is the role Ripple Effects can play: Our behavior training software – for kids teens and staff – can help reduce disproportionate discipline rates, in schools as they exist today. It can help close the persistent achievement gap between Anglo and Asian American students, and African American, Latino and American Indians. It can be an important part of the comprehensive youth development efforts needed to prepare an emerging generation of leaders to bring their collective wisdom to this intractable problem. Comments?
