There are several reasons people might feel numb in the face of great trauma.

It can be a normal response if they are in shock. Sometimes when people have been seriously injured they go into shock and temporarily don't feel physical pain. The same can be true with emotional injury; the shock temporarily protects the mind from pain until it's better able to deal with it.
